The androgen receptor is a switch for prostate cancer cell growth. Medicine is used to restrict the androgen receptor of androgen hormones, but the androgen receptor is able to use other growth routes. This re-routing turns a androgen-dependant prostate tumor into a androgen independent one. Androgen independent prostate tumours genes cause out of control cell growth. Once researchers learn more about how this happens, they will be able to create gene therapies to stop prostate cancer.
